So you want to start an online business...
If you are serious about starting an online business you need to set a goal for your success. If you don't take the time to set a goal, then you will never have a target to reach. You are in essence setting a goal for failure.
When you are planning a vacation, you plan out where you are going. This is setting a goal for your journey. The same thing goes for building a house, or any other major event in your life.
So, why is it that so many people that decide to start an online business leave this step out?
It has been proven over and over that, if you do not set a goal, you will never get to where you are going.
From the book What they don’t teach you at Harvard Business School by Mark McCormack: Mark McCormack writes about a study conducted on students in the 1979 Harvard MBA program.
In that year, the students were asked, "Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?"
Only three percent of the graduates had written goals and plans; 13 percent had goals, but they were not in writing, and a whopping 84 percent had no specific goals at all.
Ten years later, the members of the class were interviewed again, and the findings. While somewhat predictable, were nonetheless astonishing.
The 13 percent of the class who had goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84 percent who had no goals at all. And what about the three percent who had clear, written goals?
They were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together. Excerpt Courtesy of Lifemastering.com
So as you can see, if you don't start your journey with a goal, your chance of success is already determined.
It is not good enough to just set a goal in your mind, you must write it down. The study shows this without question.
Setting a goal is great especially when you write it down. But there is one more step that you should take. That step is to share it with someone that will hold you accountable.
This may be a loved one, a mentor, a friend or with a group. When you take this step, you are less likely to give up when the road gets tough.
This is something to expect when you are building online businesses. Building an home based business is different. In the beginning, you are more likely going to be doing everything on your own.
You will have to make sacrifices, things that are a part of your life right now. This may mean not hanging out with your buddies, or binge-watching your favorite show on Netflix.
These will be hard choices, but if you are going to reach your goal(s), you have to make choices that others will not understand.
You will have pushback from friends you used to hang out with, family members that you may have to spend less time with so you can focus on what's important to your business.
There is no "easy button" when it comes to building a business, either online or offline. Expect to work hard, expect to have setbacks and failures.
Learn to love them, wear them as a badge of honor.
If you've never failed, you've never tried anything new. So, if you are ready to start your journey, then let the journey begin!
